A Blockchain SaaS Solution for Carbon Measurement Reporting

Immediate action is required to enhance carbon reporting accuracy and curb greenwashing's detrimental effects. In collaboration with Climate Check and industry experts, we developed an innovative blockchain-based SaaS platform to address these challenges.

01

Overview

Executive Summary

The DigitalMRV Dashboard project focused on designing a comprehensive SaaS solution to transform the process for carbon measurements, addressing the limitations of current methods that rely heavily on manual editing of Excel spreadsheets and poorly integrated reporting systems.

This initial zero to one stage included PoC product ideation, product planning, wireframing, brand and UI design. Utilising expert validation and collaboration, the outcome was a user-centric SaaS platform with unique features aimed at improving efficiency, transparency, and accessibility.

What we did

Under the product direction of Andrew, we reimagined carbon reporting through a user-centric MRV solution. With complete oversight of the design process, we facilitated workshops, collaborated closely with experts, established product objectives, directed UX/UI efforts and managed stakeholder engagement.

To understand a complex space, we encouraged teamwork and open communication through workshops, with a goal of aligning minds to solve a bigger challenge. Engaging with experts, we incorporated feedback to enhance functionality, and produce solutions in the realm of climate action.

Discovery

Goals

A

Automate measurement and reporting processes

B

Integrate with Gold Standard reporting systems

C

Reduce errors and manual intervention

D

Improve data reliability and validity

E

Increase transparency and trustworthiness

F

Improve efficiency, scalability and adaptability

Orientation Workshops

The project began with a workshop to define the product vision, objectives, and stakeholder needs. Over a series of workshops, Andrew guided expert stakeholders through defining the problem space (what are we solving) before defining the solution space (how we solve it), together collaborating to outline the required features and functionalities for the SaaS platform.

Opportunity Mapping

Once we had captured understanding and defined requirements, we utilised our design system component set to produce initial wireframes. This allowed us to produce high-fidelity wireframes in optimal time. We went through a feedback and review process with the stakeholders over 2 week sprints. This stage allowed the team to iterate and refine ideas before moving on to developing the DMRV brand and applying to a high fidelity UI design.

Implementation

Dashboard

With the wireframes in place, we created a summary window to enable users to quickly access and understand relevant information. The dashboard is the beating heart of the experience. This feature helps streamline decision-making and reduces the time spent searching for data.

Sensor Management

Each sensor on each plant can be accessed and managed in real-time, with analysts notified of any sudden changes or issues. Data is collected and stored, to show historical information easily retrievable and shared as part of the reporting and auditing process.

Analytics

A major challenge was to incorporate configurable mathematic formulas into the analytic process. Analysts are able to easily optimise this to their requirements, using specific values dependent upon the operational setup. The analytics dashboard then outputs key data and metrics related to the MRV process, providing valuable insights and supporting data-driven decision-making. This feature helps users identify trends, monitor progress, and make informed decisions based on accurate data.

Sensor Documentation

Garbage in = Garbage out is especially true with carbon measurement and greenhouse gases. To avoid errors or ambiguity in data, each sensor is regularly calibrated, tested and audited to ensure that it meets specification and that evidence collected is accurately reported. As these sensors undergo testing, documents are attached to the specific sensor and can be easily referenced and retrieved in the audited report. This improves confidence and time to check authenticity.
